Gin Palace Britain: The destinations and activitivies for gin lovers in 2018

Britain’s love affair with all things gin-related shows little sign of slowing down—or, indeed, sloe-ing down, if the berry-infused version is more your thing.

Just drinking it isn’t enough anymore. Savvy entrepreneurs are jumping on the juniper bandwagon with experiences as lovingly distilled as the spirit itself.

Try one of these gin-soaked experiences across the UK—ice and lemon optional.

The Gin Spa

What could be lovelier than spending a few hours being steamed, soothed, pummelled and pampered? All of those things plus a big G&T, that’s what. Glasgow’s Gin Spa goes one better, infusing the treatments themselves with gin-spired botanicals and aromas of juniper and clove. A 15-minute walk from Hotel Indigo Glasgow, the spa has been popular since it opened in early 2018. All packages end with a drink from the FeverTree drinks trolley, while the “Twilight Tasting” includes a choice of treatments rounded off with a five-course tasting menu at Gin71, an adjacent bar launched by the same team in 2014.

All aboard the Gin Express

This is one train you really won’t want to miss, because tickets to join a gin-tasting journey are almost as sought-after as front-row seats for Hamilton. Yorkshire has become the hub for experiences involving sipping craft gin while chugging past stone buildings and green patchwork hillsides. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway brings a gin expert on board for bespoke tastings paired with nibbles, while Bronte Bars runs a limited timetable for the Gin Express Experience Train—keep an eye on the company’s Facebook page for the latest events.

Festival spirit

How about an entire weekend dedicated entirely to gin? Check out The Gin To My Tonic Show this September at Liverpool’s Exhibition Centre—20 minutes’ walk from Hotel Indigo Liverpool. With tonic tutorials and bartender demonstrations, this celebration of all things juniper and sloe will be a little different to your usual festivals. Think less camping in the mud and more sipping craft cocktails in teacups with your pinkie out. Can’t make the festival? Join Gin Journey Liverpool for a tour of distilleries and bars, with plenty of sipping along the way.

Back to (Gin) School

You’ll want to do your homework after this class. A mile-and-a-half from Hotel Indigo London – Tower Hill, the City of London Distillery houses a Gin Lab where you can blend botanicals to distill your very own gin, keeping a bottle of your creation. The included G&T should help get your creative juices flowing.

Birmingham Bar Crawl

It has more canals than Venice, and they may as well be filled with gin. Birmingham is booming when it comes to juniper drinking dens. There are endless permeations of G&T at the Gin Vault, a five-minute stroll from Hotel Indigo Birmingham along the canal. Plush Jekyll & Hyde has a Gin Parlour with red velvet sofas and cocktails served in vintage china while, in the Jewellery Quarter, the menu at 40 St Paul’s reads more like a novella—there are 140 gins to drool over.
