Berlin’s best rooftop bars

There are few better ways to spend a blue-skied afternoon than perched high above the city with a cocktail in hand. Like most major cities, Berlin boasts its share of rooftop watering holes with panoramic vistas. But this famously unconventional capital offers an eclectic, quirky bunch, from sky-high beach bars to hidden dance parties.

Skip the lines at the showy Fernsehturm (TV Tower) in Alexanderplatz and join locals at these hip hangouts with peerless skyline views. During the chillier months, many outdoor rooftop spots close down—all the more incentive to celebrate spring and summer here.

Solar Skylounge & Restaurant

Once you’ve located the entrance tucked away inside a parking lot, ride the gleaming glass elevator 16 stories up the side of this apartment building to a slick lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows. Before ascending to the bar, many guests at Solar Skylounge & Restaurant dine on seasonal fusion fare such as a foam soup with white asparagus and macadamia nuts or guinea fowl and rabbit served with tarragon, yellow beets, and vanilla. Afterwards, take the staircase up to the an industrial-chic space where DJs spin under the glow of exposed Edison bulbs.

You’d never know it from the street, but on top of a bland-looking shopping mall lies a funky open-air rooftop bar with chilled-out tunes. Cruise right past the mass-produced fashion brands in the Neukölln Arcaden and follow the crowd of hipsters to Klunkerkranich. This shabby-chic space is so much more than a bar, though. You’ll find a community garden here, as well as rotating cast of musical artists ranging from jazz players to DJs. On weekends in summer, the food market offers both traditional German fare such as bratwursts and more international options ranging from arepas to churros.

House of Weekend

While revellers stomp to thundering beats on the Studio Floor below, a trendy crowd gathers on warm summer nights at the Rooftop Garden. This verdant space has live DJs, exceptional cocktails, and unimpeded views of the Fernsehturm. Both the pulsing techno club and the chic terrace at House of Weekend lure high-profile talent and swarms of fashionably dressed movers and shakers. For those staying at Hotel Indigo Berlin – Alexanderplatz, this buzzy oasis is just around the corner.

Venture up to the seventh story of the Schönhauser Allee Arcaden and into another world at this Balinese-inspired beach bar, complete with palm trees. Catering to a national longing for distant, sandy shores, Deck5 feels like a little piece of the tropics right in the heart of Mitte. The atmosphere is unpretentious, the cocktails are classic, and lolling about on one of the daybeds is one of the best ways to spend a rare sunny afternoon in Berlin. Nosh on barbecued Jamaican jerk chicken, sip a caipirinha and soak in the chilled out vibes.
